A mother reuniting with son after 15 months in ICE detention. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is a very famous idiom we often overlook but that is conveyed every day in our Facebook news feed, Twitter, Instagram or any other social network we use (American Idioms, 2002). Photography can capture tearful reunions, such as above, movements, can communicate feelings, thoughts, and can inspire to be part of the message it sends. It is an important part of our society, and organizations such as #Blacklivesmatter, or United We Dream use photography and videos as an important part of their advocacy. We see it every day, we agree or disagree everyday by liking, sharing or being part of those images. It is an important aspect of a movement and its advocacy. It is also important to not only share images, but also be part and get involved in a movement. According to Kathryn Gill, documentation is accepted as a fundamental part of conservation practice (Gill, 2012). We all remember the Civil Rights movement, the Feminist movement, and the Anti-War protests in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s; we remember the strong messages it send, and not because we were there, but because the images we saw were stronger than a quote or a speech. We remember Martin Luther King Jr.’s protests and marches because of the message that was conveyed in the Photographs. We can all be part of a movement. Don’t stay behind and allow other people to make decisions for you. Take photos, embrace technology and share your message through the power of photography. As a photographer, I give my time to the Bernie Sanders 2016 campaign and the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition, where we support various organizations in Arizona. It’s time to get involved and serve your community so your community can also give you back. Find your message, your movement, your power and stand up for your message and share. Use photography as a tool and empower your community. “A picture is worth a thousand words.” By: Kassandra Alvarez Gill, K.
